Heidi and my sister-in-law Katie made this lovely donut cake for my brother, who just graduated from State Trooper “boot camp” in South Carolina. She had such a lovely idea, and it was so simple that I thought I’d share. What kid wouldn’t enjoy a birthday cake shaped like a donut??
Just bake a bundt cake and round it out a little on the top. Frost it first with chocolate icing, including the inside of the hole. The overlay vanilla frosting like icing. Sprinkle and enjoy!

Well this is certainly worlds better than what I had envisioned as I clicked through my reader—I was hoping it wasn’t a stack of donuts shaped like a cake, because I just ate maybe a little too much dessert and it would not have been pleasant to contemplate that. This is a very cute idea indeed and you managed to make it look quite realistic. And delicious.

I’m glad it was better than you had envisioned, Laura! =) Next week, I shall be sure to post “Swiss Roll Log Pile,” and really make it look like a log pile. I will forward your compliment to Katie, the chef extraordinaire. I was very impressed with her creativity! Enjoy your evening! May visions of donuts dance in your head.

Yum! I’m thinking that this might be a good idea for Joshua’s birthday. I like the donut cake idea for the graduating state trooper. In honor of all of the donuts he will be eating on his way to stop crime in it’s tracks. :-)

(Just a note to clarify — Holly and I were laughing because she meant by her opening line, that Katie is both her and my sister in law — whereas it could easily be read that Katie and I made the cake. Whereas of course it is the unique creation of our sister in law Katie — and has her adorably fun personality stamped all over it. Holly asked me to clarify so it didn’t seem like she was trying to demean my own cake making abilities by pointing out that in all honesty, I did a very poor job on this cake and in all fairness, I shouldn’t be mentioned at all :-)

Heidi, I actually spent a few seconds trying to sort out the family relations there, and then the logistics of going to boot camp in SC with a cake being made in IN, but I gave up in anticipation of getting to the rest of the post. Now it does make sense. :D I could never make a cake that looked half this put together, but once I get a Bundt pan I will probably try.
