I heard that baking soda could be used to clean silver, but wasn’t sure exactly how to use it. I found this article at e-how, and it’s really simple and it works — it left my sterling silver beads bright and shiny.
Simply line a glass pan with aluminum foil, and place your jewelry or objects on the foil. Sprinkle with baking soda. Pour boiling water over it, and make sure everything is covered. Somehow, the aluminum captures the tarnish, and leaves your silver clean.

Lauren, thank you so much for this cleaning tip. I have a cleaning cloth, but it is darned hard work, so I shall try this next time our silver cutlery set needs cleaning. :)
Have a wonderful week,
Love and blessings, Jillian ♥

It’s amazing how efficient, cheap, and safe this is, compared to using toluene-based cleaners that are carcinogenic, at least to specially bred California lab rats genetically engineered to develop cancer on contact with the atmosphere.
Just fully immerse your soda sprinkled silver on the foil, and the tarnish bubbles right off. My silver beads and bracelet literally went from black to white in seconds.
I’ve also seen plastic balls that come apart and have holes in them for cleaning silver jewelry in your dishwasher — so you could probably clean it in the silverware caddy just as easily.
It’s just so nice that we can have a simple way to make our silver shine without toluene. I’m always happy to find free, non-toxic things like this that work instead of fairly expensive toxic chemicals.
